John Belcarz Scholarship / Bourse d’études

Two awards of $1,000 each have been created by CWA|SCA Canada to honour the work and lives of John Belcarz and Dan Zeidler, who made substantial contributions to our union and its members.

John served for many years on the Executive Committee of the Montreal Newspaper Guild and was its President when he passed away in 2003. Dan was an officer in the Guild at the CBC before becoming
a Guild International staff representative in 1991. When the Guild in Canada became an autonomous organization in 1995, Dan became its western Canadian staff representative. He passed away in 2007. Both John and Dan firmly believed that everything should be done to help people better themselves and enable them to become what they want to be. Towards that aim, these awards are to aid in the personal development and enrichment of those to whom they are granted.

Applicants must include an essay of up to 1,500 words or a video, audio or multi-media presentation up to five minutes in length on one of the following topics:
• Why I believe the Labour movement is important to Canadians in this day and age.
• What diversity — the changing face of Canada — means to me.
• What social justice means to me and how we can achieve it.

1. The scholarships are open to members of CWA|SCA Canada their children, grand-children, nieces or nephews, spouse / partner.
2. Applicants must be enrolled or about to enter a full-time program at a government-recognized institution of higher learning or training (college, CEGEP, university or technical/vocational institute) and working towards a degree, diploma or certificate.
3. There are no restrictions on the program of study or discipline selected by the applicants.
4. Applicants must be prepared to accept the scholarship in the year in which it is awarded; no deferrals are allowed.
5. There is no limit to the number or value of other awards that scholarship winners may hold. But individuals are limited to receiving one CWA|SCA Canada scholarship during any given academic year.
6. The award winners must submit proof of registration at the institution where they are studying for the scholarship to become payable. The most recent student transcript of the applicant must be submitted with the application form.

Applications are available at www.cwa-scacanada.ca and are accepted until early March. Winners are announced in April.

Les candidatures sont dorénavant ouvertes pour les deux bourses commémoratives de SCA Canada destinées aux personnes qui suivent des études ou une formation postsecondaires. Les deux prix de 1 000$ chacun ont été créés par SCA Canada pour rendre hommage à John Belcarz et Dan Zeidler, qui ont apporté une contribution considérable au syndicat et à ses
membres.

John a siégé de nombreuses années au comité exécutif de la Guilde des employés de journaux de Montréal, dont il était le président lorsqu’il nous a quittés en 2003. Dan était officier de la Guilde à la CBC avant d’en devenir le représentant du personnel international en 1991. Quand la Guilde est devenue une organisation autonome au Canada en 1995, il en est devenu le représentant du personnel dans l’Ouest. Dan est mort en 2007. John et Dan étaient tous deux persuadés qu’il fallait tout faire pour aider les gens à s’améliorer pour qu’ils se réalisent. Ces prix visent à contribuer au développement personnel et à l’épanouissement de leurs récipiendaires.

Les formulaires de candidature (PDF téléchargeable) doivent être reçus au plus tard le 22 mars 2013. Le nom des heureux élus sera annoncé en mai. Les postulants doivent envoyer une rédaction de 1 500 mots au maximum, ou une présentation vidéo, audio or multimédia d’au plus cinq minutes sur l’un des sujets suivants:
• Pourquoi je crois que le mouvement ouvrier est important pour les Canadiens de nos jours.
• Ce que la diversité (le nouveau visage du Canada) signifie pour moi.
• Ce que la justice sociale signifie pour moi, et comment nous pouvons l’obtenir.

1. Peuvent postuler aux bourses les membres de SCA Canada ainsi que leurs enfants, petits-enfants, nièces ou neveux, époux(ses)/partenaires.
2. Les postulants doivent suivre un programme à temps plein dans un établissement de formation ou d’enseignement supérieur reconnu par le gouvernement (collège, CEGEP, université ou établissement
technique ou professionnel), ou être sur le point de le commencer, pour l’obtention d’un diplôme ou d’un certificat.
3. Il n’y a aucune restriction quant au programme d’études ou à la discipline choisis par les postulants.
4. Les postulants doivent être prêts à accepter la bourse l’année où elle est accordée; aucun report n’est accepté.
5. Aucune limite n’est fixée quant nombre ou à la valeur d’autres prix que les lauréats de la bourse peuvent détenir. Par contre, un lauréat d’une bourse de SCA Canada ne peut pas en recevoir une seconde dans une même année scolaire.
6. Pour pouvoir obtenir la bourse, les gagnants des prix doivent soumettre une preuve de leur inscription à l’établissement où ils étudient. Le relevé de notes le plus récent du postulant doit être joint au formulaire de candidature.

Le formulaire de candidature est téléchargeable au www.cwa-scacanada.ca. Les demandes sont acceptées jusqu’au début Mars. Le nom des gagnants sera annoncé le 30 avril.

BELCARZ, John. Passed away at the Montreal General Hospital on October 20, 2003 at the age of fifty-one, after a brave battle with cancer, surrounded by family and friends. Beloved husband of Mary; loving father of Mark and Paul, dear brother of Terry Gartler, and brother-in-law of Bob Gartler, and wonderful uncle of Jennifer and James. Will be greatly missed by extended family and many friends.
